The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently released a new report on the Pet Medications Industry which found that despite an increase in competition from other retail outlets, (pharmacies, big-box stores, supermarkets and online pharmacies) the industry could become more competitive if:
- Consumers had greater access to “portable” prescriptions (filled by someone other than their veterinarian).
- Non-veterinary retailers had greater access to supplies of pet medications.
- Consumers had more low-priced generic animal drug options to choose from.
